What the old shell is telling you

There is a real difference between a surface that has worn out and a structure that has failed, and the fix is not the same. Fine surface crazing, staining, rough plaster, and tired waterline tile are finish problems. A crack that runs through the shell, follows a consistent line, or reappears in the same place after a previous patch is a structural one, usually driven by the same clay movement that shows up in slabs and foundations across this county. Resurfacing over a moving shell buys a few good seasons and then reads the crack straight back through the new finish, so it is worth knowing which one you have before choosing materials.

Draining a pool on the Gulf Coast is the risky part

An empty pool is a large, light box sitting in saturated ground, and after a wet stretch the water table around Montgomery County can be high enough to lift it. That is what a popped shell is — hydrostatic pressure with nothing inside the pool to resist it. It is why a hydrostatic relief valve sits in the floor of most gunite pools here, why the timing of a drain matters as much as the method, and why a renovation scheduled around the weather is a different job from one scheduled around a calendar. Any plan that starts by emptying the pool should be able to say what happens if it then rains for a week.

The plumbing is older than the finish

A renovation is the one moment when the lines, the main drain, the skimmer throats, and the returns are reachable without cutting anything new. Pools built before the current suction-entrapment standards may carry a single main drain or a cover that no longer meets them, and pool plumbing from the 1990s has usually had at least one repair nobody wrote down. Whether to open the deck is a genuine fork in a remodel: doing it adds cost to a job that was about appearance, and not doing it means the next leak gets found the expensive way, under a deck that is by then brand new.

Finish choice is a chemistry decision as much as a look

Standard plaster, quartz, and pebble finishes wear at different rates and answer differently to what the water has been doing for the last decade. Long Texas cooling seasons mean more hours of sun, more evaporation, and more chemical addition than a northern pool ever sees, and a salt system changes what sits against stone coping — soft limestone and some travertine are not indifferent to it. The right finish for a given pool depends on the water it will live in, how it is sanitised, and how the surround is built, which makes it a conversation about maintenance habits rather than a colour chart.

Can you update the look without changing the pool shape?

Often, yes. Interior finish, tile, coping, decking, lighting, and surrounding outdoor spaces can substantially change the pool’s character without rebuilding the shell.

Can equipment be included in a cosmetic remodel?

Yes. Equipment and controls can be reviewed alongside the visual work so any useful upgrades are coordinated with the renovation schedule.

Do you renovate spas and water features too?

Spa spillways, raised walls, water features, lighting, and adjacent materials can all be considered as part of a broader pool renovation.

Does the pool have to be drained for the whole project?

It depends on which parts of the pool you are changing. Resurfacing means an empty shell, because the finish is applied to bare structure. Waterline tile, coping, decking, equipment and most plumbing work can often be done with the pool full or nearly so. That distinction matters more here than it would inland: groundwater in Montgomery County sits high after a wet stretch, and an empty shell is the one condition in which a sound pool can be lifted by the pressure underneath it. So a renovation that requires draining gets scheduled against the weather, and one that does not is a considerably simpler job to plan.
